Turkey celebrated a remarkable growth in its tourism sector, welcoming a total of 17,809,078 visitors during the January-May period of 2024. According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, 15,784,213 of these were foreign tourists, with an additional 2,024,865 Turkish citizens residing abroad visiting during the January-March period. This brought the total number of visitors to 17,809,078.
In May 2024, Turkey experienced a 14% rise in foreign visitors compared to the same month in 2023, reaching a total of 5,130,119. Over the January-May period, the number of foreign visitors grew by 12.47% compared to the same period in the previous year, illustrating a significant boost in tourism popularity and economic impact.
In May, the Russian Federation topped the list of visitors to Turkey, with 739,017 visitors, marking a 15.32% increase. Following closely, Germany saw an 18.12% rise with 729,505 visitors, while the United Kingdom recorded a 21.62% increase with 550,592 visitors. Other significant contributors included Bulgaria and Poland.
The major contributors to Turkey's tourism included:

- Russian Federation: 1,078,294 visitors
- Iran: 51.78% increase, 946,437 visitors
These countries have played a crucial role in boosting Turkey’s economy and enhancing its international recognition for cultural and natural attractions.
During this period, 63.6% of visitors came to Turkey primarily for “tourism, entertainment, sports, and cultural activities.” The second major reason was “visiting relatives and friends” at 22.4%, and “shopping” was the third at 6%. Conversely, Turkish citizens residing abroad mainly visited for “family and friend visits” at a rate of 70.4%.

The excellent hospitality, high-quality services, and visa-free travel options significantly influence the choice of Russian visitors.
The summer months, especially July and August, see the highest influx of tourists, ideal for beach tourism due to the warm weather. Coastal resorts in the Mediterranean and Aegean regions are notably crowded. Winter tourism remains popular at ski resorts like Uludağ and Palandöken, but the primary visitor surge is during summer. Spring and autumn are preferred for cultural and nature tourism.
